Mit „Saw“ trugen der Regisseur James Wan und der Drehbuchautor Leigh Whannell im Jahr 2004 dazu bei, dass eine neue Härte Einzug ins Mainstream-Kino hielt. Gezeigt wurde blutiger, dreckiger Terror – was als Reaktion auf die Post-9/11-Ära interpretiert werden kann. Um den psychopathischen Serienmörder John Kramer alias Jigsaw, verkörpert von Tobin Bell, wurde im Laufe der langlebigen Reihe auf dramaturgisch zuweilen recht unelegante Weise eine immer ausführlichere Hintergrundgeschichte gebaut. Der Versuch, sich von dieser zentralen Figur zu lösen, scheiterte mit „Saw: Spiral“ (2021) weitgehend.
Das aktuelle Sequel Saw X ist zeitlich nun zwischen den Ereignissen aus dem Original und der ersten Fortsetzung Saw II (2005) angesiedelt. Von vielen Fans und auch einigen internationalen Kritiker:innen wird der Film als bester Beitrag zum Franchise seit 2004 bezeichnet – und tatsächlich bieten das Drehbuch von Pete Goldfinger und Josh Stolberg (die bereits die Vorgänger Jigsaw und Saw: Spiral schrieben) und die Inszenierung von Kevin Greutert (der schon bei Saw VI und Saw 3D – Vollendung Regie führte) etwas mehr, als es die kruden Teile 2 bis 9 zu tun vermochten.
Zunächst einmal mutet das Werk, abgesehen von einer kurzen gewaltsamen Fantasie des Protagonisten, wie ein bitteres Drama in kalten Farben um Einsamkeit, Krankheit und Tod an. Aufgrund seines Gehirntumors wird John von ärztlicher Seite ein baldiges Ableben vorhergesagt; eine Heilung scheint ausgeschlossen. Durch Henry (Michael Beach), einen Teilnehmer der Krebs-Selbsthilfegruppe, wird er jedoch auf die Arbeit der norwegischen Medizinerin Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund) aufmerksam, die auf Basis einer Behandlung, die ihr Vater entwickelt hat, lebensrettende Hilfe verspricht. Durch ihre nicht zugelassenen Methoden steht sie jedoch mit den Behörden in Konflikt.
John begibt sich nach Mexiko (eingefangen im offenbar obligatorischen Gelbfilter), wo Cecilia mit ihrem Team in einer ehemaligen Chemiefabrik eine Operation vornehmen will. Wie sich aber herausstellt, ist die Frau eine Betrügerin. Gemeinsam mit seiner treuen Assistentin Amanda (Shawnee Smith) entführt John Cecilia und deren Kompliz:innen Valentina (Paulette Hernández), Mateo (Octavio Hinojosa) und Gabriela (Renata Vaca), um ein weiteres „Spiel“ zu spielen.
Seit dem Erfolg von Saw und Eli Roths Hostel (2005) kommt der Begriff Torture p*rn häufig zum Einsatz, um die selbstzweckhafte, ausbeuterische Darstellung expliziter Gewalt auf der Leinwand zu monieren. Ob diese Filme letztlich nur dazu dienen, Grausamkeiten vorzuführen, oder ob sie innerhalb des Thriller- und Horrorgenres auch andere Qualitäten besitzen, lässt sich vermutlich nicht final beantworten.
Im Vergleich zum Auftakt der Reihe lässt sich über Saw X indes festhalten, dass jegliche Form von Empathie mit den Opfern noch weiter in den Hintergrund gedrängt wird. Geht es in Teil eins noch um Figuren, die (ebenso wie wir) anfangs gar nicht begreifen, was eigentlich mit ihnen geschieht und weshalb sie in diese schreckliche Lage geraten sind, haben wir es hier mit Personen zu tun, von denen wir als Zuschauer:innen ganz klar wissen, dass es unleugbar schlechte Menschen sind, die sich durch ihre Betrugsmasche am Leid anderer bereichert haben.
Während Saw seinerzeit ein höchst ambivalentes Szenario entwarf, übernimmt Saw X deutlich manipulativer die verdrehte Moral des Killers, der neben seiner Gehilfin die einzige Figur mit Tiefe ist. „Das ist keine Vergeltung, das ist eine Wiedererweckung“, heißt es – und die einzigen, die John alias Jigsaw innerhalb des Films widersprechen können, sind Leute, die zuvor als völlig korrupt entlarvt wurden und somit für uns keine Identifikationsfläche bieten. Wenn John an den Kopf geworfen wird, er sei „absolut krank“, stammt dies von einem Gegenüber, das sich moralisch schon disqualifiziert hat. All das verleiht Saw X eine ziemlich unangenehme, reaktionäre Note.
Rein handwerklich ist der Film wiederum nicht nur eine deutliche Verbesserung gegenüber dem Output der Reihe seit den Ursprüngen, sondern auch für sich genommen ein souverän gemachter Genrebeitrag. Eine Gigli-Säge (also eine Knochensäge aus geflochtenem Stahldraht), eine Schädelfräse und ein Bestrahlungsgerät richten Fieses an. Einerseits können wir aus kulturkritischer Perspektive daran verzweifeln, dass das Zeigen eines Hantierens mit derartigen Gerätschaften als legitime massentaugliche Unterhaltung im Multiplex-Saal gilt. Andererseits kann es als gefahrlose Konfrontation mit Ängsten verstanden werden: Wir setzen uns fiktiven schaurigen Situationen aus, um reale Sorgen zu vergessen oder uns im Idealfall dagegen abzuhärten.
Wenn die obskure Handpuppe in Saw X in die Fabrikhalle hineingeradelt kommt, hat dies gar einen Hauch von ikonischem Horrorkino. Ob es für die Aufrechterhaltung eines Genrefranchise allerdings nötig ist, sämtliches Mitgefühl mit denen, die da gequält werden, zu begraben, sollte ernsthaft infrage gestellt werden.
